cahors country house .com

The Lot region is in the Midi Pyrenees, in South West France. Its alluring mix of beautiful, peaceful countryside, wildlife and excellent food and wine permeated with its deep sense of history make it the perfect holiday destination.

The Local Area

The tiny hamlet of Laval lies on the plateau of the Causse de Limogne, between the Rivers Lot and Aveyron, making both easily accessible.

The village of Vaylats (4km away) has a boulangerie/small convenience store.

The closest town is Lalbenque (7km away), famous for its truffle market. Here you will find tennis courts, shops including boulangerie, restaurant, cafe, supermarket and bank.

An absolute must on your itinerary is a visit to Domaine de Merchien for wine tasting and buying. This is naturally produced, herbicide free, organic wine (see right) and we can vouch that it doesn't give you a headache! This nearby vineyard is owned by an English couple, David and Sarah Meakin, who will also do vineyard tours if you give them a call beforehand. You will find a bottle of their wine and their beer as part of the arrival pack that greets you on arrival at the house.

Cahors, Capital of the Lot

A twenty minute drive will take you to Cahors, the capital of the Lot region, an interesting medieval town built on a loop of the River Lot with many cafes, restaurants, shops and an ancient cathedral (at right, with market). Its most famous landmark is the Pont Valentre (right), an outstanding medieval fortified bridge.

The Cahors region is especially famous for the rich heavy red wine it produces - often referred to as black wine - affording you plenty of opportunity to taste and buy directly from the vineyards.

The Rivers and their Dramatic Scenery

The Rivers Lot and Aveyron are carved out of limestone creating dramatic scenery with some spectacular and beautiful gorges that can be viewed by canoe or kayak from below or by hiking or rock climbing from above.

There are numerous villages clinging to the cliffs. St Cirq Lapopie (top), on the Lot and about a 30 minute drive from the house, is one of these and regarded by many as one of the prettiest villages in France.

St Antonin Noble Val, once a stop on the pilgrims road to Santiago de Compostella is an authentic medieval town with old stone houses and narrow winding streets, lying on the River Aveyron. It is approximately a 30 minute drive away. These are just two examples of the many picturesque and interesting towns and villages in the area.
